How can conferencing be used to further implementation of the LEARNING-FOCUSED Strategies Model?

The purpose of conferencing is to give you the opportunity to talk about your own learning. Talking about new learning, of course, helps to internalize it, to make it your own. It is also an opportunity to reflect on implementation of initiatives. For LEARNING-FOCUSED, conferencing specifically looks at:

* What strategies have you tried as a result of a LEARNING-FOCUSED workshop?
* How did the use of the strategy increase student engagement and/or learning?
* What questions do you have about implementing the Learning-Focused model?

Conferencing may occur following initial training with a LEARNING-FOCUSED Instructional Specialist, your school leadership or your school-based coaches. No matter who conferences with you and your team, it can be a powerful tool for getting support as you plan and deliver instruction differently.

The focus of conferencing is always on student learning. However, leaders or Instructional Specialists may address a variety of issues or concerns during the session:

* Lesson and/or unit development
* What is working or not working
* Think alouds modeling planning and/or instruction
* Scaffolding planning and/or implementation when struggling
* Identifying and addressing issues or concerns
* Examining student data or student work
* Planning next steps

How do schools experience the full impact of conferencing?

Because conferencing with LEARNING-FOCUSED Instructional Specialists are a choice for schools, it is important to make the most of the conferencing time.

* Prepare - Make sure everyone is aware of the expectations for implementation. Prepare for conferencing through reflection or other meetings. Grade level or course teams should have conversations about the LEARNING-FOCUSED model prior to conferencing days. Spend some time identifying areas of concern or needs.
* Communicate - Prior to the conferencing day, an administrator and school-based coach should talk with the Instructional Specialist or person conducting your conferencing about needs and expectations. Be as specific as possible about where everyone is at in terms of implementing the LEARNING-FOCUSED and other initiatives, as well as the school's plan for implementation. Share schedules and locations for conferencing with all involved.
* Conferencing days - Principals and coaches should plan to attend the conferencing sessions even if they are not the one's conducting the conferencing. Our Instructional Specialists also provide support and skill development to principals and coaches so that they will learn to lead conferences also.

Conferencing, whether with a LEARNING-FOCUSED Instructional Specialist or the school leadership team, is a critical aspect of follow-up and on-going professional development. Keeping the conversation about implementation going provides an avenue for improvement of daily practice.
